Types of drinking spots in Singapore — KTVs, pubs, bars and lounges
Updated
Singapore’s drinking spots fall into six types: nightlife KTVs, KTV lounges, party KTVs, pubs, bars and host clubs — and the real difference between them is not the decor, it’s the pricing model. KTVs charge a minimum drink order per room, party KTVs charge per session, pubs and bars charge per drink, and host clubs carry dollar minimums per room.
Across the 47 venues we track, here is how the types compare. All figures are reference figures from our venue pages — each carries the date we last checked it, and unverified numbers are marked as such.
| Type | Pricing model | Typical entry cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nightlife KTV | Room minimum in towers/bottles | Towers $40–99; small room = 1 tower | Groups of 3–12, private singing |
| KTV lounge | Tower or bottle minimums, premium | Towers from $58–150; up to $500/room | Client entertainment, discretion |
| Party KTV | Flat fee per session | $300 session (happy hour), $500 night | Big groups, up to ~30 pax |
| Pub | Pay per drink, mostly no minimum | Towers from $38; Guinness pint $12 | Casual nights, open singing |
| Bar | Pay per drink, no minimum | Cocktails from $15; pints $17–18 | Dates, small groups, conversation |
| Host club | Dollar minimum per room | $800–1,000 room minimum | Hosted private rooms, late nights |
Nightlife KTV — the room minimum model
The biggest category we track (20 venues). No hourly rate: each room carries a minimum drink order counted in beer towers and bottles, and the room is yours for the session. Small rooms start at one tower; VIP rooms run to eight towers and four bottles. Tower prices range from $40 at Ume KTV in Novena and B12 Delux near Clarke Quay to $99 at District 1 in Orchard — most sit at $68–88. Doors open mid-afternoon (3:30–4pm at most rooms) and close at 3am; Supreme KTV on Orchard Road runs a morning session to 6am. Where hosting applies, the tip is a separate priced line on the bill — the full breakdown is in KTV prices, explained. Loud inside the room, private outside it. Best value cluster: Jalan Besar, where towers start at $78 and happy hours run long.
KTV lounge — the premium floor
Same room logic, higher unit prices. VIP Japanese Karaoke in Orchard lists towers from $150 and runs 8pm–6am; K Palace works on bottle-based minimums from $500 per room. This is where client entertainment happens — quieter service, steeper bills.
Party KTV — pay for the room, not the drinks
One venue we track, one distinct model: Wave Party K at Bugis prices whole rooms per session — $300 during happy hour, $500 at night, rising by room size to suites that take around 30 people. The cost is predictable to the dollar before you walk in, which no tower-minimum room can offer. See the rest of the Bugis cluster for comparison.
Pub — pay per drink, sing in the hall
Ten venues, mostly Boat Quay, Bugis and the east. You order by the glass, bucket or tower; several halls carry no minimum at all (SMLJ, Pub 28’s hall). Towers start at $38 at LOL — Life of Liquor, the cheapest on our list; a Guinness draught at Gossip Bar in MacPherson is $12. Open singing, pool and darts are common. Hours are typically 5–6pm to 3am, 1am out east. Loudest open-floor option — no privacy, no commitment.
Bar — drinks first, no singing
Nine venues, the only type where music takes a back seat. No minimums as a rule: cocktails from $15 at Draft Land, $16 at BQ Bar on the river, pints $17–18 at Ceni (where sofa seating does carry minimums on Friday and Saturday). Bars close earliest — several by midnight — so they suit the start of a night, not the end. Quietest type on this list.
Host club — hosted rooms, dollar minimums
Four venues, all with hosts and largely female clientele, all late: De Diamonds and Babyface in Orchard open at 11pm and run to 6am. Minimums are quoted in dollars per room — $800 at De Diamonds and BV VIP, $1,000 at Babyface — with towers from $98–148. The highest entry costs we track; hosting charges appear as priced line items on the bill.
Picking between them
Decide on three questions. Private room or open floor? Room means KTV; floor means pub or bar. Fixed budget? Party KTV sessions and host-club minimums are known upfront; tower minimums depend on what you drink. First time in a KTV room? Read the first-timer primer before you book — happy hour (usually until 7–10pm) is the same night at a meaningfully lower price.
